AnimeOnDVD chief Chris Beveridge has previously let his opinions be known about things within the anime industry that annoy him such as trailers and locked down anti-piracy warnings but yesterday, he posted a more personal piece about English dubs. See, he’s been trying to introduce his kids to more challenging anime than Naruto and is having trouble finding many family-friendly English dubs. He profiles his experiences with Adult Swim’s redone dub of Lupin the 3rd, Phoenix and Castle of Cagliostro, each of which has “hell”’s and “damn”’s thrown into them (as well as a few “shit”’s in the case of Cagliostro). Chris thinks that the primary cause is an appeal to the teenage audience by the studios; he even posed the question of “Is the dub industry sacrificing the next generation of fans for the current ones?” as the sub-headline of his article.

I was browsing the local Borders yesterday afternoon after a busy day on campus and looking through the magazines, music, and movies. I don’t know, I wasn’t paying that much attention to what other stuff was in that area. But as I was walking away, my eyes caught a glimpse of the word “Animusic” and I had to back up to look at it a little more. It turns out to be a collection of computer-animated instruments playing virtual concerts. For some strange reason, my mind jumped from that to anime music videos and how anyone could try to monetize them. I immediately found several flaws with the concept but I think it’s still an interesting idea to muse upon and make a post out of it.

I had been working on and off on this for a couple months until I finally decided to finish it and push it out the door. If you’ve been in a bookstore (e.g. Borders) with a manga section, you have most likely seen a couple people reading volumes in the aisle. Some might even be laying in the adjecent aisle. Now, if they read through that entire volume and put it back, is that ethically wrong? Short answer: yes; long answer: maybe not. Read the rest of this entry »

Ever since I wrote my pseudo-legalese breakdown of Bandai’s threat over SolStaSoc a month ago, that particular entry has been linked to in a few forums. (I will not use its full name in order to avoid being picked up by Google searches and possibly making it worse.) While I like that those links bring traffic, a further inspection into what kind of context my “article” is presented in troubled me. Some of the forums are Eastern European-based so I don’t understand what the hell they are typing. But on an English-language one, many posters portray Bandai as greedy. I don’t agree with that view and do not wish to be associated with it. Read the rest of this entry »
