Before this week, the downloadable episodes that ADV Films was selling through its website were priced at $4.99 each, much higher than anime on iTunes albeit ADV’s stuff was at a much higher bitrate as well. Now the company has announced that it has begun offering downloads of “over 500 episodes” from 32 series for $1.99. Sounds good, right? Well, maybe not if you look at what you’re getting for your two bucks.

The surprise seemingly-out-of-nowhere news of the week is ADV’s license of AIR the anime and its subsequent 87-minute movie. The company has set the release date for the first of four volumes as August 14 and stated a new DVD will come out each month - this means that all of AIR will have been brought to the R1 market by the end of November. That’s like Viz releasing three volumes of the Naruto manga a month from September to December, except with video discs.

I think it’s worth noting out that it was last Friday that ADV announced at Anime Boston that the first volume of Innocent Venus will come out on August 21. P.S. I am not lying about the title of this post. I actually did finish downloading AIR the TV series (but not the movie) last night and was - and still am - planning to watch it this weekend, although I’m going to be occupied with yard work part of Saturday and I have a paper due Thursday…

I picked the first episode of Samurai 7 because I hadn’t seen it before. Now, I would have posted about this last week when it was actually news but my attempts to record a screencast came up not so good so I’ll have to settle for something more pictorial.

After hearing about ADV Universe on the Anime Nano Podcast, I decided to try out the service with the free AWA promo episode of Guyver. The initial paid offerings include some recent releases (Comic Party Revolution) and some old stuff (Nurse Witch Komugi). Under the “Coming Soon” category there are titles such as Utawarerumono, Diamond Daydreams and Super Milk-Chan (all dubbed).

The site asks you read the EULA twice, once when you register for an account and another time when you make a purchase. I copy-and-pasted the agreement to a text file and found some interesting things in it. Read the rest of this entry »
