I finally got around to watching the Detective Conan oneshot J-drama this past Thanksgiving weekend and it made me realize how exaggerated the anime really is. For example, Mouri Kogoro’s passion was about as over-the-top in the drama as it was in the TV show. The special follows Shinichi’s final case before he gets shrinks into Conan Edogawa.

Yomiuri TV has launched a website for a live-action adaptation of Meitantei Conan scheduled to air this fall as the anime concludes its 10th anniversary celebration. It will take place before Shinichi’s transformation into Conan Edogawa so there will be some high school moments in it between Shinichi and Ran. But one thing that I feel will make or break the series is the role of Kogoro. He must have at least one drunk scene; otherwise, the adaptation will have failed in my book.

The German website AnimeY has posted an English-translated interview with Gosho Aoyama, the manga-ka of long-running Detective Conan. He was a guest at last weekend’s Comic-Salon (June 15-18) in Erlangen, Germany. Aoyama has been writing the Conan manga for 12 years and previously did Yaiba (1988-1993) and Magic Kaito (1988-1994).
