Last month at AOD, I interviewed Sean McCoy after his Animation Industry Insight panel after about 45 minutes and last night I got around to uploading the video to Vimeo. I would have added subtitles or at least composed a transcript because the convention space was a bit noisy for the first half, and I might append said transcript later when I get the time, but right now I’m pushing this out the door since I have wanted to refer to it for a while in relation to industry trends and fan habits.

I hope you excuse my lack of prepared questions and the trouble I had in formulating them into something I could ask. It’s always odd for me to hear my own voice on tape and the stumbling made it worse during editing. As I gain more experience doing things like this, my delivery should improve as well as the quality of the questions.

I have been thinking of doing a weekly feature like this for a month or so and decided to kick it off this week when three series are slated to debut in Region 1 - Black Blood Brothers, Gurren Lagann, and Shuffle!. Future installments will likely go up Sunday night/early Monday and may eventually replace This Week in Akiba since I’m too lazy to wade through tens of posts on Akibablog or its recently debuted English version, despite its moments of Engrish.

Last night, I drove home from San Francisco tired from AOD 2008. I seemed to do more stuff outside the convention than inside, such as walking 10 minutes to Japantown or getting lost on the other side of town, taking Muni halfway back before jumping off at Chinatown and eventually making my way back to the Cathedral Hall Hotel. The latter is part of a long story that I could tell on the up-and-down draining experience of the convention (something I might flesh out tomorrow on AOR) but for now, I’ll hit the important stuff and punctuate those with pictures after the jump.

I DID learn two easy lessons that I try to abide by the next time I plan to attend a convention: don’t attend a convention alone because you’ll get bored sooner and, more importantly, figure out where you’ll stay overnight well before the event. Otherwise, you’ll end up in a Redwood City inn near the railroad tracks.

This weekend I shall be attending the Animation on Display convention at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco and planning to hand out my new Moo minicards around the dealers’ hall and general con space as well as recording some short video segments inside and outside the hall. Even though I’m not going as press, I have been told I can interview people so long as they sign a waiver so I’m currently putting the finishing touches on that document. Although there are no guests I am looking forward to seeing, there are some events I want to check out…

Last weekend I drove to Sacramento for Sac-Anime 2008 and enjoyed this year more than 2007’s iteration, although it still wasn’t as great as it could have been.

Bet you never thought of this way of giving presents?

Yes, I am aware that today is Boxing Day but I won’t consider this twelfth and final entry in this year’s “12 Days of Christmas” retrospective (sponsored by the Anime Blogging Collective) to be very late since I got some of my presents, including a new wristwatch, today, For this last highlight, I will return to Lucky Star and not focus on any particular moment (e.g. the Inital D parody, Comiket, the cosplay cafe) but rather something that spanned the series and carried it through its twenty-four episodes - the variety of topics that were discussed between Konata, Tsukasa, Kagami, Miyuki, and others.

Once again I refer to an anime I began watching in anime club for my eleventh anime-related thing I’ll remember from 2007 but then again it’s been that kind of a year for me with regards to watching stuff. The loose reimagining of Romeo and Juliet by Gonzo is better in some parts than the original and worse in others but it has been entertaining to watch so far for the first eight episodes, something that might not last long considering it’s Gonzo. This is actually the Pangya panel that was before mine at Fanime

I couldn’t think of something not personal for what was supposed to be the tenth thing for yesterday’s intended “12 Days of Xmas” post so I conceded to write about the experience of putting on a panel at Fanime, the steps I had to go through, and why I am reluctant to devise holding another one at any convention unless I have a really great and structured idea.

Okay, the ninth anime-related thing that interested me in 2007 is something that actually hasn’t been revealed that much: Akira Kogami’s life before Lucky Channel. The basic fact we find out about Minoru’s co-host is that she was a former idol but not much else. I was interested in the mystery so I rewatched Lucky Channel segments and took note of all the references Akira made to earlier in her career in an attempt to construct a short back story for her.

In yet another “12 Days of Xmas” look at a show currently running in anime club, the eighth anime-related “highlight” for me this year has been the awkward moments that turned into laughs in Bokura Ga Ita. Yes, I know that the two main characters suffer from “missing eye syndrome” (as exhibited above), the music is average, and Nana Takahashi is dumb as a brick. But her naivety and dimness paired with Yano’s latent sex drive and childish aloofness make for some funny moments and save the anime from being brought down by the emotional flashbacks about Yano’s previous (and now deceased) girlfriend Nana, who annoyingly looks like she was Takahashi’s older sister. Srsly, guys.

Anyway, I went and made a bunch of clips (15 in total) from the first third of the series and embedded them below.
