The poll about Newtype USA and pricing has been growing old in the sidebar so I felt a new question was well overdue. I wanted to see the method of behavior in which people typically watch anime series so the question is “Which of the following best describes your anime watching behavior?” The options are watching week-to-week, marathoning or multi-batching the series on fansubs, buying the DVDs as they come out, waiting for the box set, or just watching it on TV.

Personally, my answer is watching in batches either on fansubs or DVD. (That’s right, I took a weaselly way out and forged my own answer.) In that situation, I watch the first few episodes, forget about it for a while, and then watch the rest in a long session like I did with Black Heaven earlier this week. I currently have many anime (including Air, Black Lagoon, Chobits, and Kanon) that I simply haven’t gotten around to watching because I want to view them in long sessions akin to picking up a box set of “24″ and going non-stop ’till the end with the marked difference that a 26-episode anime would take only about 11 hours. Perhaps during my Christmas vacation…

I don’t have the dedication to watch week-to-week like many of the anime bloggers who compose summary posts, mainly because I get distracted by sports on TV, videogames, or reading news - the same reason I’m behind on this second season of “Heroes”. Of course, I could claim that I watch “week-to-week” through the anime club showings but I am not seeing those soon after the Japanese airings so it’s not truly the same.

I used to watch anime on TV 2-4 years ago when I used to videotape things; I remember seeing Wolf’s Rain, FLCL, Big O, s-CRY-ed, Samurai Champloo, Evangelion, and both Stand Alone Complex seasons on Adult Swim. However, the same excuse I used for fansub “live” viewing above - too many distractions - applies to this as well. Also I’m not that interested in seeing Bleach, Blood+, Death Note, or whatever else is on there now.

I don’t usually buy box sets, a habit that might change as I increasingly have less space to store my digital versatile discs. One reason is that it takes so long in many cases for it to be released, which is why I am looking forward to the Emma box sets being released by Nozomi. Even though I watched the first season, I slacked off and only watched the first episode of the second and would like to support a show that I enjoyed for its Victorian setting and the tenuous relationship between Emma and William while finding out what happens next. Another is that sometimes the redesigned box looks worse than the box used to store the original singles as was the case for Excel Saga. Finally, I have a thing for looking at the trailers on, say, Pioneer or older ADV DVDs and wonder at when particular anime were actually released in the US.

Enough about my habits, what are yours? Please leave a comment if you like because the raw poll numbers don’t let me know particular subtleties. I’m sure that many of you would have checked multiple boxes if I had made the poll multi-answer, a move I was debating with myself in implementing but finally decided against. Maybe I’ll do it in the next one.

  1. Usually, I don’t have time to watch subs as they come out, so I use the weekends for catching up.

  2. Definitely week-to-week, as how it’s meant to be. The story just flows best when there’s some time to roll each episode around in your head (especially if there’s some sort of impact) for awhile before going on to the next. A week surprisingly provides sufficient-enough time for that to take place, while not being too long a stretch that the memory of the events transpired becomes forgotten.

  3. Really good and really interesting post. I expect (and other readers maybe :)) new useful posts from you!
Good luck and successes in blogging!
