Wild Arms TV (short for Twilight Venom) is an anime based on the first two installments of the future Western series of video games and aired in 1998. I haven’t played any of those games so I was not familiar with the world nor any characters before I watched the five episodes on the first disc and expecting that it would be decent. It met those expectations.

Two women, Loretta and Mirabelle, and a couple ratlike creatures help Dr. Kiel Aronnax break out of a floating-in-the-air Alcatraz and also find a short 25-year-old man where there is supposed to be treasure. The now boy-sized Sheyenne has electric powers, has the ability to use ARMS, and is apparently a reincarnation of the king of the Evil Race, which was destroyed by God 10,000 years prior. The pairs happen to meet up in each later episode as Sheyenne looks for his original body and Loretta looks for rare ARMS and treasure.

I thought this was funnier and had better action than the Moeyo Ken OVA but it was still fairly average. Apparently, this anime was produced by Bee Train, which now that I think about it the animation was not too bad. The story was not that enticing although the backstory scene about Sheyenne being shot was interesting. I did enjoy the bickering between the two Popepi Pipepo creatures and Sheyenne getting used to his smaller body but the other characters were kind of meh. The ending song, “Hoshizora Jet” by Guitar Wolf, made up a bit for some of the lackluster parts but not very much. Also worth noting were a few minor subtitle slipups like “I am ARMS collector” and misspelling daughter “dauhter” but that’s not something to blame on the creators but rather the ADV subtitlers back in 1999.
