Okay, those of you who are knowledgable with kanji, please tell me why there is a difference between Thomas and Tom when writing them in Chinese? I found these two cards on a rack near the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) in Düsseldorf and wanted to know what each says. It would also be appreciated if you could point out any inaccuracies.

Basically, the first character of the two are the same, for the sound of Toh. The reason why the second character is different is because in Thomas, the second character is mah and while in Tom is Mu. The third character in Thomas is for the Si sound.
In another word, if you pronounce the Chinese characters you get something that sounds similar to Tom and Thomas.
Thanks, although I kind of wanted to find out what the characters meant like “big-courage-tree” or something like that. Maybe I should just do my own research…
