The fleet deploys for battle

About a week and half ago, I got an e-mail from a PR firm about a cartoon series called Storm Hawks, which airs on Cartoon Network Monday nights at 7pm (eastern/pacific). The production company, Nerd Corps, asked them to “get in touch with high-caliber, well-written anime bloggers” like me. I don’t consider myself an A-rank blogger but whatever, I said I’d do it so now after watching the first seven episodes, I’m typing this short review up. (Other PR firms/departments of other companies, my contact info is on my About page.)

The main story is Aerrow and his scrappy crew, the Storm Hawks, are fighting to defend the Atmos from the evil Cyclonis. The Storm Hawks is one of many groups of Sky Knights that are charged with the duty of defending their particular region. This group of teenagers flies in their airship, the Condor, from Terra to Terra and fight in the sky and on the ground with their motorcycles equipped with collapsible wings. There are many different types of crystals that can power up swords, cloak objects, and be used in storm-creating devices among other things.

The action is fun to watch, the animation is smooth, and the dialogue is witty. The mythology of each place the Hawks visit on deepens the viewer’s understanding of the Atmos world. The members have a nice chemistry, are varied in characteristics, and has each shown their advantages to the team (Finn less than others). And the concept of flying motorcycles is pretty cool.

Master Cyclonis, a girl

But ultimately it comes down to good vs. evil, especially the rivalry between the Dark Ace and Aerrow. That is, when they do start fighting. Most of the episode time is spent with the crew dealing with whatever problem they have, whether it is navigating the Black Gorge (barely any Cyclonians appear in that episode) or competing with another Sky Knight squadron for a Phoenix Stone. Thus, many episodes can be watched by a first-timer without too much back story knowledge. The opening sequence provides a nice setup, anyway, so it’s not much of an issue.

Overall, I like it a lot but I still skip over the theme song as it became annoying after the first episode.

Disclosure:
I received the first six episodes on watermarked DVD’s for review and a large Storm Hawks T-shirt that I asked for.

The reason I got addicted to Storm Hawks is because of is because it’s cool. That’s all.(And, the another reason is: I like Aerrow too much!!!)

  7. I like Finn because he is constantly being eaten (They are going to eat me, I’M A DELACESY!!!) and Stork, because he is morbid like me, has hair covering one side of his face, like me, and he is pessimistic(Like ME!!! I can come up with at least 20 ways that I could die[logically] anywhere I am instantly)!!! They rok!!!
