I have a soft spot for cute violence and the one-shot manga Yoki Koto Kiku has plenty of it. Apparently, the head of the Nekogami family has died and his grandson and rightful heir Sukekiyo is off at war in someplace unknown. This obviously creates a problem within the family and each of the family’s triplets Yoki, Koto, and Kiku are now scheming to off the other two siblings, as well as Sukekiyo’s fiancee and family maid Tamayo, with axes and traps because only one of the four can claim the inheritance.
The first thing that caught my eye is that every page is outlined with a black border, which I know from my manga-reading experience indicates something occuring in the past. It was until the final chapter that I found out exactly when in the past (around 1936) but I didn’t need to know that to enjoy reading it. The evil but weak shinigami became a little annoying in the later chapters after he had to stay in the human world as punishment for being seen by the triplets.
The author Koge-Donbo also wrote Di Gi Charat and Pita-Ten, a fact I probably could have guessed from the cutely drawn characters and distinctive reaction faces. According to the translation notes, the whole work is partly a parody of the Japanese mystery novel Inugami-ke no Ichizoku (The Inagami Clan), one installment in the adventures of Kosuke Kindaichi. Other references include the appearance of Phantom Thief Red (Kaito Kid from Detective Conan) and shared character names like Nya-chan and Shima with Pita-Ten.
Also - I can’t believe I found this just now! ARGH! - there is a questionnaire in the back that you can fill out and send in (along with $1.50 of unused US stamps) to get a dust jacket, while supplies last. Now I gotta go to the post office to buy a damn envelope and some stamps. *sigh* I’ll mail it off tomorrow and hopefully I get mine a couple months from now. Anyway, it was a good read, had some beautiful parts in it, and most importantly made me laugh so I’ll give it an A-.
